10 DIY Boredom Killing 5 Minute Science Projects

by: Levi Blackman

The days are hot, and going outside to enjoy nature’s wonder is out of the question, and BBQ is off unless someone gets the pool up and running. So you are stuck inside, bored with nothing to do but be thankful that you don’t have to be outside. NOT TRUE MY FRIEND. I have a solution.

DO IT YOURSELF SCIENCE PROJECTS! You can make all kinds of cool stuff and impress your friends! Plus, when it comes time to build your latest entry into the Science Fair, you can use all you learned as inspiration. Someone call you an idiot? Show them up by harnessing the power of nature, chemicals, household products, and a little imagination.

Here are my favorite at home fairly safe projects, each you can do with stuff laying around the house, and most in less than 5 minutes (actual prep time). Don’t mind the music, we can’t all have good taste in our ears.

10. Magic Sand
Since I live in Texas, we don’t have sand, and believe me, the red clay doesn’t work the same. But if you don’t mind having parents look at you funny, find the closest playground and grab a bag full. Make sure not to look at the kids too long, or make funny eyes at the ready to pounce mothers.

9. Instant Hot Ice
Don’t you hate when you go to get ice out of the freezer and the tray only has a single ice cube to offer? Worry no more, ice is just a touch of way (just kidding, do not eat).

8. Smoking Fingers
Smoking is bad for you, in fact horrible. It will kill you early, no doubt about it, and you are lucky if you don’t look 100 by the time you reach 30 (who cares when we are having this much fun!). But, on the bright side, when you smoke from your fingers, people think you are from the womb of satan.

7. Match Rockets
Fireworks may be illegal, or at least most places. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a little fun and make your own (even if they are very small). Thank goodness for no music.

6. Actual Laser Gun
Laser pens can be fun, especially when you have a dog or cat to mess with, but growing up it was all about the laser guns. The things that destroyed things, not put pretty designs on the wall. Well, not you can turn your laser pointer, into something that actual generates some heat! A little more complicated and requires some tools, but worth it in the end.

5. Make your Breakfast Dance
Forget snap, crackle, and pop! We want to see our cereal dance like there is no tomorrow! Or, at least stick to a piece of plastic.

4. Time Travel
This is a kind of open ended project because you could basically jump off high things or take drugs. This one is a little longer, and doesn’t walk you through it, but I am sure you can figure out ways to replicate this time travel experiment.

Of course, if you really want to time travel, you are going to need a plane.

3. Destroy Cleaning Supplies
No one likes to clean, and what a horrible way to relieve boredom. This next one wins for best music, best production value, and perfection in simplicity.

2. Build a Electric Motor
You use them everyday to run pretty much anything other than a light bulb. How about making your own! You could even use this somehow…maybe a fan or something?

1. Melt Bottles in the Microwave
If none of the above really meets your daily boredom quota its time to bring out the big guns. This isn’t really recommended, especially if you like your microwave and want to keep it around to do what its supposed to do; cook your food.

So even though the dog days of summer are killing our skin and making our armpits stink, make something out of the situation…IN THE NAME OF SCIENCE!
