When you are the greatest band of all time, with millions of fans in every nation in the world, and your contract with your major controlling recording label comes to an end, it is time to unleash the ideas, the innovation steaming in the back of your head. Freedom has come to you to do what you want with your music Mr. Yorke, and you have not let us down.
Things are going to be different now, or again, for music and its big industry. Much in the same way CD’s changed the way we listened and bough music, the Internet has finally matured to the point to allow the world a new medium. Now, instead of two cent plastic, it can be offered for free through wires straight into your iPod. Instead of big promotion companies pushing an album hard to make up for production costs, a word of mouth rumor or announcement on Myspace is all the is needed to bring the flock of fans to your door. Bands can cut out the middle man, charge less to the happy customer, and make more money off album sales than they ever could have any other way.
The concert scene stays the same, getting more expensive with inflation and everything else, but still the same, bringing out large crowds because in the end people really want to see the music being played, and be in front of the idols they listen to so much during their normal life. Perhaps they start giving away their CD at shows to bring more people out. Perhaps those who don’t really like the concert scene might come out to get their hands on the new limited edition Radiohead USB album, complete with secret track.
Worry not my friends, change like this is good. Forcing our superstars to use their genius to adapt to changing climates keeps them sharp as a tack. Plus, we get to benefit in being the first to get music straight from the artist to our ears, without the middle man taking a cut. We have hated this middle man for years and now that he is out of the picture the future looks brighter than ever before. Now my entire music budget can go straight to the people making it. I want to choose who I make rich, and I don’t want it to be some guy who just happens to know a few people to get the name out there.
Plus, Radiohead managed to put out an amazing album. Everyone is missing it because of all the uproar over how it was released, but it is amazing to listen to, and has revived the entire Radiohead collection. It has brought me back to loving Radiohead again, enough to blare them from my room all day. Stop talking about how they changed an industry and talk about how they proved where good music comes from. You don’t need money and power to create something great. Just release yourself, and express whatever it is you want to express.
In the latest album you can tell that Radiohead has listen to the fans, and messed the own musical taste with something that the fans will enjoy. They amazed the world by actually listening to the customer, finding out exactly what they are looking for, and providing it 100%. It is almost a lost art in business, but Radiohead has proved that it still works, and will crush the competition.
So, instead of continuing on and on, repeating what everyone already knows, I salute Radiohead for all that they have done, for me and the world. Thanks.
