ihateneedles.jpgDiabetes costs you and me a lot of money. Forget the fact that I will have horrible complications and die early because the cure for my disease didn’t take precedence over the profit potential of keeping me sick and in need of expensive medication. Diabetes takes our standard of living down a notch each and every year, and no one seems to give a shit that they are losing all this money.

Lets do some quick math:

The small town of Denton, Texas sits in Congressional District 26. Of the 706,370 Congressional District 26 residents in 2006, approximately 34,300 have been diagnosed with diabetes. The total cost of diabetes for people in Congressional District 26 in 2006 is estimated at $328,300,000. This estimate includes excess medical costs of $204,600,000 attributed to diabetes, and lost productivity valued at $123,700,000. (info from The American Diabetes Association using the Diabetes Cost Calculator. Figure out how much diabetes is costing your community here.)

So 706,370 people splitting a bill of $328,300,000 comes to about $467.77 per person.

Or, a Xbox 360, or grocieries for a month, or a car payment, or rent. That is a lot of money for most people. Think about what you could do with the extra cash?

Of course, most of that burden is on diabetes anyways. Using the math above you could say that diabetes are out $9571.42 a year. Ehh, its their disease, their problem.

What you don’t understand is that money could have went to buy food for someone hungry, which would end up in the hands of a farmer trying to make ends meat. Or your fathers store would sell more televisions and DVD’s and perhaps he wouldn’t have to close shop. This money is going straight into the hands of a large corporation, which owns all the recipes for the life support medication. They few happy owners are using the money to support their spoiled children’s drug habits, and we are left splitting a huge fucking bill.

I’m tired of losing my friends, losing my health, and losing my bankrolls to something as curable, as stupid and unnecessary as Diabetes. This isn’t a disease caused by the autoimmune response, its a disease caused by the greed of a few scumbags that just can’t seem to get enough.

Please help me, and help millions around our country, escape this horrible fate. Thank you.
