Hey Cops, What do you Say

by: Levi Blackman

Public Service Needs to Remember Their Public Responsibility

On the way home from school today my friend ran into a large group of police officers investigating something on Fry St. Walking on the sidewalk she passed on woman officer, who rudely told her “Go Around.” This was not followed by a please, or an explanation, just a stern demand.

The cop car I farted in last spring.

If I had this happen to me, I wouldn’t think to much of it because I don’t pay a lot of taxes because I am a full time student, and that cops salary wouldn’t change if I existed or not. But to my friend, who works a full time job, and spends a lot of her hard earned money to pay the police and to build the sidewalk she needed to walk on, this action was extremely offensive.

What ever happened to the idea that the police were here to protect and serve the public? Why have the police become some type of internal army, controlling our actions in the name of some great American cause? I’m not trying to say that my friends rights were violated, and that she was imprisoned for no reason or anything like that, but for us to feel safe in our own neighborhoods, we have to believe that the police, given the power to control and tell people what to do, given weapons that can kill, are on our side.

Why wouldn’t they be on our side when they exist for us?

I’m not trying to start riots, or claim that we are living in a state of emergency, with police being out of hand, but I urge that our public servants remember what they stand for, and not take that for granted. Be polite when handling the day to day, innocent until proven guilty people of your neighborhood, and lets all enjoy a better sense of home.
