Usually the idea of a high school comedy makes me sick to my stomach. In fact, just for suggesting we go see said high school comedy makes me lose a lot of respect for you. But, I really love Arrested Development. When the show tanked, I had to go to the mental hospital for a couple weeks. I was having a little trouble finding purpose. Anyways, since George Micheal from Arrested Development was in the movie, who I love, and the other fat kid, who I also love, I figured I could take the pretentious shoes off for a second, go drink some beer, and enjoy a movie.
The long ramblings throughout the movie, filled with profanity and penis jokes, reminds me a lot of Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle. (of course, it could be because they showed a trailer for the next H and K coming next year.) Much like Dazed and Confused and American Graffiti, the whole film takes place in a single day and night. They picked the right movies to model after, but the movie as a whole lacked the depth to make it a truly great comedy.
And I have to say that Superbad wasn’t half bad. It have a few very memorable lines, some shocking enough to still make me laugh if I think hard enough about them. The two main character actors are both great, able to deliver their lines with a certain awkwardness that makes their lines even funnier. They step out of character for a split second in a surprising display of lewdness, something that would never happen in real life, but fits perfect on the big screen.
For example, two girls come up to the fat kid (whose name is Jonah Hill, so I guess I will be nice and stop calling him a kid.) and tell him that if he scratches their back, they will scratch his (referring to getting alcohol underage.) So Hill, or Seth in the movie, smiles, and then says, “Great, but you see, my back is actually on the head of my cock.” A few strange stares from the attractive girls later, and everything is back to normal.
I tried it once, and all I got was a black eye. I guess my back scratching favor wasn’t big enough to keep me from getting punched.
Anyways, so even though the story behind the laughs is lacking, the duo (a trio is you include the tag along nerd guy) goes on a crazy adventure to get “booze.” The night never seems to end as they run into problem after problem. A few crazy guys later, some period blood on fatties blue jeans, and cops who are on drugs and somehow manage to not lose their jobs by taking advantage of high school kids, they finally make it to the party, just to find out…
I don’t want to spoil it for you, but they find out that they are meant for each other, gay, and they live happily ever after adopting children. Perhaps.
I give this movie a B+. It was funny and entertaining, but failed to meet the “classic” comedy standard. What do you think? Let us know with a comment!
