Hot, Empty, and Beautiful
It is strange living in a city that dies in the summer. All the college kids head back to their homes for the summer, to recoup and recover from the semester of drooling never ending school work. The streets become empty, and driving become easier. You don’t see as many people walking the streets and the parties start getting smaller and smaller each weekend that comes.

Of course, the summer time is when you really get to know a select group of friends. Since the numbers have gone down, everyone seems to meet up with everyone else. There are not as many people to mingle with, so your mingle friends become you close summer companions. Together you can battle the lonely and hot summer days.
Then you have the crazy people, like me, that attend summer school. Perhaps they need to catch up to the rest of the group that goes home to enjoy the summer. These select few attend extreme classes that last only a few weeks, and last for hours at a time, every day. You have lots of homework as you try to learn a good nine weeks of material in five. Of course, you have to comfort your lonely bored summer friends, or you will end up with a bunch of depressed crying souls in your bed, telling you they can’t handle life anymore.
You tell them to just wait, it is a temporary feeling. School will start again and people will come back that you can talk to. Then you return to your homework, thinking to yourself, just one more hour, and then I can sleep.
Summer is really a time to build yourself up, make your life better, and become more of the person you want to be. This summer I might try and work out to look good when all the people come back. I am going to read a lot and become well spoken. I am going to catch up on all the latest music (a constant struggle) so that I can hold deep musical conversations with the music majors.
Plus with no body around to bother you, you can build an empire in the ghost town of Denton, waiting for all those to return so you can unleash your powerful force. Build a business in a time when it is easy to get around town and run errands, and you have all the time in the world to plan and speculate.
So I welcome the Denton Summer of 2005. It may be one filled with few new faces, but it is a time a building and renovation. Life is going to be good, and the citizens of Denton will prosper.
